Creating an emergency kit for your vehicle

People often speak of having an emergency plan, what to do during a fire? what if the power goes out? so on and so forth. Another important part of emergency planning is having an emergency preparedness kit for your vehicle so if you break down everything is handled. I am a Canadian therefore our winters are very rough (snow, slush, etc.) but also in the summer anything can happen.

Besides the obvious (SPARE TIRE) that you should have in your vehicle you should also have a kit incase something happens that you need it. So what should be included?

  1. Food- Food that won’t spoil (such as energy bars)
  2. Water- In plastic bottles (that way they won’t break if the water freezes)
  3. Blanket- If you break down chances are you won’t be able to run your heater going to need to keep warm
  4. First aid kit – Make sure it is one that includes a seatbelt cutter (in case of collision)
  5. Small shovel, scrapper & snowbrush – In case you get caught in a blizzard
  6. An extra set of clothes (for each individual who drives or is a frequent passenger of the vehicle) – If your clothes get wet it can lead to a dangerous drop in body temperature
  7. Dry shoes (for each individual who drives or is a frequent passenger of the vehicle)- Same reason as the clothes
  8. Whistle – Incase you need to attract attention
  9. Windup flashlight
  10. Candle in deep container & matches
  11. Road flares or warning light
  12. jumper cables
  13. mitts/ gloves/hats
  14. Car jack/ tire iron
  15. car charger for your phone
  16. pocket knife
  17. roadside assistance– So not necessarily a necessity (some people can’t afford it or don’t want to invest) but i’m talking from experience roadside assistance is priceless

I live in cold and snowy MN, so all of our cars definitely have emergencies kits in them! You have great tips here for creating them.

This a great idea, my grandparents were once trapped in their car in a blizzard and they so wish they had had some of these things.

This is such a good idea. Very important. We don’t have a vehicle but I do make sure when we go out as a family on the subway we have a little emergency kit with us!

I am going to write down this list and take it to the store. Thank you! I am so not ready for a god forbid emergency. And with 2 kids, I really should be!

This is a great list, especially during these winter months when people can easily get stranded somewhere because of weather. I am definitely a “plan for the worst” person so I appreciated this.

Wow I can’t believe I never thought about having one of these. My husband and I have three kids and this is so important to have if we ever got stranded on the side of the road.

This is a wonderful reminder for any who drives or uses their car everyday. It’s good to have an emergency kit inside your car in case something happens. I love the list as well, it has everything you’ll ever need!

So so important! And something I really need to work on. We end up packing something every time we go out the door instead of just having one fully ready to begin with. Smart!

This is a great roundup – especially in the winter and especially for anyone taking road trips. We made note of this list and our gathering up the items to stowe in the car. Thanks for sharing. You’re a DOLL!

Thank you for this list dear. I need to put snacks. A case of water. Shoes, and extra clothes for everyone. We travel often and take many off road trips. Wise idea to have extra things. You never know.
